Shaon Chowdhury dominates New Delhi Rating Open 2025

Shaon Chowdhury scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win New Delhi Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Mani Bharathy scored sole 8/9 to secure a second place finish. Eight players scored 7.5/9 each. Out of them, IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam was placed third according to tie-breaks. He was only player to draw with the eventual champion, Shaon in the penultimate round. The top three finishers remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹850000. The top three prizes were ₹71000, ₹51000 and ₹31000 along with a trophy each respectively. The five-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Sara Foundation at Thyagraj Stadium in New Delhi from 31st January to 4th February 2025. This was Shaon's second rating tournament triumph of the year. Both of them occurred in Delhi.

11th seeded Shaon Chowdhury was the sole leader 7.5/8, heading into the final round. Five players - IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam, Parth Belwal, Sanyam Srivastava, Mani Bharathy and Gopal Krishna Maheshwari were trailing him by half point at 7/8 each. Shaon defeated Gopal to become a clear champion. Mani won against Parth to secure second place. Sanyam drew with Ramnathan and the latter finished third.

Allayar Shirliyev's (TKM, 2196) ambitious sacrifice 26.Nxe5+? did not work out dxe5 27.Qg4+ Ng5 28.Bxe5 Qc8 and Black went on to win the game. 26.Bxe5 was the correct way which White needed to choose.

A total of 503 players including two IMs took part from various places all over the country and also from Kenya, New Zealand, Turkmenistan and USA. The five-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Sara Foundation at Thyagraj Stadium in New Delhi from 31st January to 4th February 2025. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
